Nomadic Adventure and RV Living

Life on the Brink of Change

Life has been nothing short of insane these last few months. With just 16 days until my retirement, I’ve been busy setting up my pension, Social Security, and Medicare. The countdown feels surreal, yet exhilarating.

Shane’s big move from West Virginia on September 1, 2024, marked the beginning of our journey toward downsizing. We’ve been donating items, tossing the unnecessary, and gearing up for a yard sale planned for early May. Our goal is clear: to leave the house by early June.

Meanwhile, we’ve been working hard to ensure Serenity, our future home, is road-ready. She’s at the shop as I write this, undergoing an oil change, brake and suspension checks (those scraping noises have us concerned!), and a thorough inspection of her belts and hoses. A few weeks ago, we had her generator serviced, and it’s now running perfectly. However, a recent refrigerator issue revealed that we needed a solenoid—a part no longer manufactured in the U.S.—which had to be sourced from China. Fingers crossed it works out, so we don’t have to invest in a new fridge.

On the interior front, Serenity has received some thoughtful upgrades. We’ve swapped out the deteriorating jackknife sofa for a comfy futon that fits like a dream. Shane removed the cushions on the overhead cab, replacing them with insulating gym mats to optimize storage space. A gorgeous tapestry now separates the living area from the cab, adding a touch of charm. We’ve also installed twinkle lights, added a steel cover to the fridge doors for magnet use, and mounted spice racks. To keep everything neat, we’ve stocked up on storage cubbies to organize clothes, food, and linens.

Technologically, Serenity is keeping up with the times! We installed an Android Auto monitor that connects to our radio, a new rearview mirror with a wireless magnetic camera for sharper visuals (especially at night), and a tire pressure monitoring system—an essential addition for peace of mind on the road. And to top it off, we’ve invested in two AiPas electric bicycles, complete with off-road tires and a hitch mount ramp.

Amid all this, we’ve managed to visit my dad every other weekend and balance work commitments. It’s been a marathon of effort, and I’ll admit—I’m absolutely pooped. But the thrill of what’s ahead outweighs the fatigue. I’m beyond ready to hit the road and embrace the adventures that await!
